National Devil’s Food Cake Day (May 19th)

Days Of The Year Calendar 2023 - Now Available!

Deep rich chocolate cake made with melted squares of chocolate and a cup of coffee baked in? Yes, please!

National Devil’s Food Cake Day is here to show respect and appreciation for this incredibly satisfying dessert that has been delighting families for more than a century.

History of National Devil’s Food Cake Day

Invented in the United States in the early 1900s, Devil’s Food Cake is a moist and rich chocolate cake made with layers and typically covered in chocolate frosting. The first printed record of a Devil’s Food Cake recipe can be found in an American cooKBOok dating back to 1905.

The name, Devil’s Food, comes from the fact that it is very dark and rich, containing more chocolate than a regular chocolate cake might. A chocolate cake this rich could almost be called “sinful”, thus the association with the devil!

First established in 2004, National Devil’s Food Cake Day has grown in popularity each year ever since. The idea for the day is to bring back the nostalgia and popularity of Devil’s Food Cake by giving it a little attention – and perhaps sharing it with younger generations so they will love it too.

National Devil’s Food Cake Day is here to enjoy and celebrate the incredible richness and (almost) sinful decadence of this amazing dessert!

How to Celebrate National Devil’s Food Cake Day

Days that pay honor to desserts are some of the easiest to enjoy! Get on board with National Devil’s Food Cake Day by celebrating with some of these tasty ideas:

Make a Devil’s Food Cake

One major difference from typical chocolate cake is that Devil’s Food Cake uses melted squares of dark chocolate instead of just cocoa powder. In addition, coffee is sometimes added to the Devil’s Food Cake recipe, added to enhance the moistness as well as the dark, rich flavor.

In celebration of National Devil’s Food Cake Day, try making one of these cakes at home and then sharing it with friends or family. And those who aren’t as adventurous in the kitchen can even try making one from a boxed mix. Don’t forget to make two or three layers and then frost it with deep chocolate icing for a completely decadent flavor!

Get Creative with Devil’s Food Cake

While this type of chocolatey goodness is certainly delicious in its original form, in honor of National Devil’s Food Cake Day, perhaps it would be fun to make things a bit more special and interesting. Try out some of these variations on this classic cake recipe:

  • Devil’s Food Cake Mix Cookies. Use a boxed cake mix to easily make these rich and delicious dark chocolate cookies.
  • Devil’s Food Cake Strawberry Trifle. Make the cake and then turn it into a trifle by piling it with layers including whipped cream and berries.
  • Devil’s Food Cake a la mode. Surely the cake is moist enough on its own, but adding a dollop of vanilla ice cream just takes the cake!
