National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day (April 20th)
Tropical fruit makes everything more special, including cake. And mixing it with a caramel sauce and turning it upside-down? Well, that’s just a fun bonus. Now it’s time for National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day!
History of National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day
Getting its start in the early 1900s by the company now known as Dole, the canned pineapple became popular in the US several decades before Hawaii was even a state. Prior to this time, pineapple could only be sourced fresh, which made it much more difficult for people in colder climates to access it. And, of course, pineapple is a critical part of the recipe for this delicious cake!
It seems that the recipe for the cake was created sometime in the early 1920s, though no one is quite sure who the originator was. By 1926, The Hawaiian Pineapple Company (which would eventually become Dole Pineapple), ran an advertising campaign that invited people to share their Recipes using canned pineapple.
The pineapple recipe contest was won by Mrs. Robert Davis of Norfolk, Virginia. This delicious cake was just one of the many exciting results of that campaign and certainly contributed to the increase in its popularity throughout the United States.
